Alpha was born on September 30, 1926, Perkins OK. She was the third of four daughters born to Phillip Rhodile and Cloda Katherine Arthur. Her childhood was spent in Payne County graduating 8th grade from IXL School as Valedictorian of all Payne County. She was a proud 1944 graduate of Perkins High School.

On December 1st, 1944 she married James Leland "Jack" Longan and they were blessed with six children: Phil, Gary, Rhonda, Stan, Rheta and Toni. She attended Friends Chapel Church, where she taught Sunday school and helped with vacation bible school. She embraced the teachings of the church and instilled those beliefs in her children by example. For several years she was a member of the Progress Sunshine Club.

After almost thirty years of being a loving wife and stay at home mom, she went to work at KC Manufacturing in Guthrie. She later started a career at the OSU Student Union in housekeeping. Her honesty, integrity, reliability and work ethics quickly led to a promotion as Head of Housekeeping, of which she was very proud. In her retirement from OSU she enjoyed spending time with her family. Sunday dinners were always special as her love for cooking resulted in a wonderful meal for her entire family. She was a talented seamstress, graduating from making her children's clothes to piecing beautiful quilts. Her love for hand embroidery resulted in flawless pieces of art. She enjoyed traveling, antiquing, fishing and spending time with her sisters Estella, Elsie and Morine.

She was a loving grandma who dearly loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They always knew "Grandma Butch" would have their favorite foods for Sunday dinner and keep the cookie container full.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, her sister Estella Jacobs, son James Phillip "Phil" Longan, son-in-law Jack Shafer, grandson Steven Joseph "Joey" Arnett, and great-grandson Gabriel Dane Longan.
