Velma Herndon

October 06, 1919 - November 04, 2015


The loved ones of Velma “Jean” (Wynn) Herndon are in mourning over her passing on Thursday, November 4, 2015. Her sweet, pleasant, easy to get along with caring ways will be deeply missed by her family and those who knew her. The greatest generation just lost another great one; however her legacy of honesty, dependability, responsibility, steadfastness, and accuracy will be remembered by all those she touched. Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 7th at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Reverend Richard Poe officiating. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jean was born at home October 6, 1919 to Oklahoma pioneer Hugh Frazier and school/music teacher Samantha “Manta” (Bailey) Wynn in the remote western Oklahoma community of Carpenter. She graduated from Elk City High School in 1936 " no easy fete when living out in the country many miles from school and before school buses were available. In spite of these circumstances, Jean was determined to get an education. She did just that by graduating from Hills Business College in Oklahoma City before starting her career with the Federal Government (USDA State Office) where she retired in 1980 after 30 years of service

Jean was married to John “Roy” Herndon February 3, 1942 for over fifty years, until his passing in 1999. They resided in Stillwater after Roy Graduated from OSU in 1950 and raised their two children here. Royce Gene Herndon (Stillwater) who graduated from OSU and Regina Herndon Phillips, retired attorney (Destin, FL.). She has one beloved granddaughter Kelly Jean O’Shea (Phillip). She was the proud great-grandmother of Chris O’Shea, Paige O’Shea, Dylan O’Shea all of Destin, Florida.

Jean was very talented, enjoying many activities and organization in Stillwater throughout the years: she loved playing golf and was an officer of SWGA, was a bridge winner at Stillwater Senior Activity Center, enjoyed many trips with the Stillwater Travel Club, was involved with NARFE as a past president, won ABWA Woman of the Year, had a great time singing with the Silver Bells and was proud to be a charter member of Total Health where she exercised until she was 95 years old. She had a great faith in God, attending the Stillwater Church of Christ for more than 60 years.

Jean was predeceased by her loving parents and her beloved brothers and sisters- Clell Wynn, Bailey Wynn, Leta Bowman, Nay White. She held a special love and was especially close to all their children, her nieces and nephews. Jean was also predeceased by her dear and much loved sisters-in law Ella Clift Wynn and Alloy Wallace Herndon. She is survived by her beloved sister-in-law Pansy Herndon Henson. All their children, her nieces and nephews, meant so much to her.
